Dear Members of T.A.W.S.F.,
I was born in 1980 in Istanbul. Today I am
second year student in Yildiz Technical University
in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering.
On the night of August 17, 1999, like many
other people, I woke in the middle of my deep sleep
and sensed the most inexplicable fear that I had
ever felt. Since then, I still feel that horrible
earthquake in every cell of my body. Our "home" was
one of the smallest apartments in a eigth story
building in Kucukcekmece.
Before th earthquake we had a happy and
peaceful life. However, with the first tremors of
that disaster, it was terribly loud and very scary,
we got up from our beds and for 25 seconds, looked
for a place to hide. I thought death was coming for
all of us. My parents and I huddled under the
dinner table, but the noise and experience was very
disturbing. The first and second floors of the
building sustained very heavy damage as did the
machines of the shoe factory. The walls seemed to
fall down. When we heard these sounds of the walls
collapsing, our hops diminished and my mother
started to pray. Thank God, we survived. This was
shear luck. We are now staying in Pendik, at the
home of one of our relatives.
We had through Hell, but life had to go on.
My future and further education were waiting for
me. I was heartbroken but went back to school. As
an earthquake victim and with the support of my
teachers, I sent the scholarship application to
TAWSF. I will be very happy and glad if I recive
the scholarsip from your organization.
My heartfelt thanks and appreciation goes to
all of the many organizations that helped and
supported us during these troubled and difficult
times of our lives.
May God never let happen to others what
happened to us.
