·Frequently Asked Questions·

What is TAWSF and what does it do?

TAWSF stands for Turkish-American Women's Scholarship Fund. TAWSFís objective is to partially finance university education for needy, university bound women in Turkey.

Who receives the scholarships?

Female students who are needy and in good academic standing. Needy refers to a student coming from a family unable to finance her university education. Students in good academic standing refer to those students achieving a 3.0 or better, on a 4.0 point system, grade average.

How are the students selected?

Female students in Turkey are invited to apply for scholarships, and the members of board of TAWSF decide which applicants are the most qualified.

What does the scholarship pay for?

It provides partial funding for books, tuition, and living expenses.

Why only for women?

Although women in Turkey have been pursuing university education for much of the 20th century, needy families usually make their son's education the first priority.

How many scholarships have been awarded ?

TAWSF was established in 1989. It has provided financial assistance to 29 university students, which includes three students from the recent earthquake area.

How does TAWSF raise its funds?

The means by which TAWSF obtains funds for its scholarship program are hosting lectures, social events, and collecting admission fees to these events. We also accept donations. In addition, currently one generous contributor is sponsoring a student through TAWSF.

How much of my contributions go directly to the students?

Because TAWSF is an all volunteer organization, all contributions ( less minimal administrative expenses) go directly to the students.

How can I help?

TAWSF needs volunteers to work for this worthy cause. Many Americans, Turks, and Turkish-Americans are members. Most important, TAWSF needs financial contributions to expand its scholarship program. We currently pay $900 for one year's scholarship. We can create scholarships in your name, in your loved oneís name, or for any special event/purpose you have in mind. Please consider TAWSF among your charitable contributions. All contributions are tax deductible and TAWSF will provide acknowledgement for your tax purposes. With permission, names of all charitable contributors will be published in our newsletters. Should you be interested in TAWSF membership and/or a charitable contribution, please complete the following and return it, with your donation as indicated. We thank you for your continued support of this worthy cause.
