TAWSF Co-Sponsors Cumhuriyet Bayramõ
Ball,
Score Big for the Scholarship Fund

More than 325 persons attended the Cumhuriyet
Bayramõ Ball held at Chicago's Palmer House to
commemorate the 77th anniversary of the Turkish
Republic, Saturday, Nov. 25, 2000. The event was
under the auspices of the Hon. Consul General Yavuz
Aktas organized by the Turkish American Cultural
Alliance (TACA) and the Turkish American Women's
Scholarship Fund (TAWSF).
A social hour with cash bar preceded the dinner
in the elegant ballroom of the historic Palmer
House. Following the Hon. Consul General Aktas'
remarks, the leaders of the sponsoring groups made
introductory comments. Chicken dinner and bottles
of wine were followed by dessert. An eight-piece
orchestra played popular dinner and dance music
until midnight, at which time a Turkish disc jockey
added an a la Turka flavor to the festivities.
TAWSF president Seniha Karata_ worked tirelessly
until the late hours to make sure the event went as
planned and the guests were fully entertained. The
never-empty dance floor, conversation and laughter
emanating from each table showed that the
organizers succeeded.
The money will go to scholarships for young
women attending universities in Turkey. Special
thanks to Yüksel Karatas for making
arrangements to have the ball held at the historic
Palmer House. This ball would not have taken place
without his efforts. Also, thank you all for coming
and making this commemoration not only meaningful
and fun, but also profitable.
