Chicago Area Organization Provides Financial
Support to Female Students in Turkey for University
Studies
The Turkish American Women's Scholarship Fund
(TAWSF) was founded in January 1989. This idea of
providing financial support for needy women in
Turkey to graduate from a university and to be
prepared for the challenges of modern society, with
equal opportunities, originated with
Ayhan Lash, Leyla Harfoush, and Belma
Selçukoglu.
TAWSF's main objective is to provide
scholarships to needy and accomplished female
students for the duration of their university
education, with the requirement that they maintain
a B average or higher. TAWSF is a non-profit
organization with all income used for student
scholarships.
Since 1989, TAWSF has supported 40 students
during their study at various universities in
Turkey. A scholarship provides $900 US per year per
student to partially offset the increasing costs of
their higher education. To apply for a scholarship,
each student must write a letter requesting
financial assistance including an explanation of
why they need this assistance. There are more
applicants than TAWSF can accept. Most are
outstanding students, ranking either first or
second in their class.
Typically, TAWSF holds several fund raising
events each year, focusing on medical, cultural, or
social topics. These events also provide the
opportunity to meet other people interested in
Turkey. Event tickets are sold to all interested
people plus donations are encouraged and gladly
accepted.
